On your way to the German Island Usedom a first stop will be made at the old Hanseatic town of Greifswald before you reach Peenemuende by a 20-minutes ferry crossing. This small town used to be the site of experimental ground for rocket propulsions. On October 03, 1942 the first long-ranged rocket of the world was launched here from Peenemuende by the Germans. With this kind of missile a new epoch of danger became true. Later protests of morality have been encountered by claiming this project a major step for space travel. Finally, it was Wernher von Braun and his team who successfully developed the first earth satellite and its Saturn rockets. He also became responsible in cooperation with NASA for the famous US space programs Gemini and Apollo with its first landing on the moon 1969. Remains of this German testing ground can still be seen in Peenemuende as well as some aircraft of the former East German Democratic Republic. Beside old buildings and a chapel - right here at the harbor you may also see „U-461”, one of the biggest former Soviet diesel submarines earlier equipped with ballistic missiles. Once the best kept secret in Germany, today this place attracts thousands of visitors every year! After visiting the testing ground and the Historical and Technical Center of Information a scenic drive shows you the unique and natural landscape of Usedom Island and some of the beautiful seaside resorts. Arrive in Warnemuende in time for dinner on board.
